Vines have been growing on the Butte since at least 944. The nuns of Montmartre Abbey planted vines there in the 12th century, and by the 18th century, vines covered three-quarters of the hill before disappearing. It was in the 1930s that they reappeared with the creation of the Clos-Montmartre by the City of Paris and the planting of 20,000 vine plants. The first grape harvest festival was held in 1934.
